How your PSD is handled
PSD files are decoded on our server because browsers cannot read them. Each file travels over HTTPS, is processed in memory, and nothing is stored after the result comes back. That makes the process secure enough for unreleased brand work.
What is a PSD file?
The PSD file format is Photoshop's native document. It stores layers, masks, text, adjustment settings and effects so a design can be edited later. Alongside all that, Photoshop usually saves a combined PSD preview of the final picture, which is also what file managers use for a PSD thumbnail.
PSD layers explained
PSD layers stack like transparent sheets: a photo, a text layer, a shape, a colour adjustment. When you flatten PSD content, all visible sheets merge into one picture. A JPG is always that PSD flattened image.
Why is PSD so large?
Every layer is kept at full resolution, often in 16-bit colour, plus history-friendly data. A poster with 40 layers can easily pass 200 MB, while the same design as a high quality JPG may be 2–5 MB. That is why a PSD file too large to email is so common, and why PSD file size drops so sharply after conversion.
PSB and 16-bit files
A PSB file is Photoshop's large-document format for files over 2 GB; here each file must be under 25 MB. A 16-bit PSD is saved as 8-bit JPG, which is all JPG supports. A CMYK PSD to JPG conversion comes out in screen colours (RGB).
Layers, transparency and what you get
JPG is a single flat picture, so the result is one image of the design as it looks, not separate layers.
Are the layers kept?
No format like JPG or PNG can hold layers. You get the flattened design. To keep the layers editable, keep the original PSD alongside the JPG.
Transparent backgrounds
JPG cannot store transparency, so any see-through areas are filled with the colour you choose, white by default. For a logo or cut-out, a PSD transparent background to JPG will not work; pick PNG instead, because PSD to PNG transparent output keeps the clear background intact.

PSD vs JPG and PSD vs PNG
PSD is the working file, JPG is the photo-style copy, PNG is the lossless or transparent copy. You can also convert to WebP or PDF in the image converter, so PSD to WebP and PSD to PDF are covered too.
Everyday jobs: client approvals, social posts and print
Client approval
A PSD for client approval is easier to review as a JPG. When you send PSD to client contacts who do not have Photoshop, attach a JPG instead. Quality 85 keeps text crisp while the file stays small enough for WhatsApp or email. A PSD from freelancer work can be checked the same way before you pay the invoice.
Instagram and website use
For social posts, convert at quality 85–90, then use Resize image with social presets for sizes such as 1080 × 1350 for a portrait post. For web pages, set a longest side of 1920 or 1200 px.
Banners and print
A PSD banner to JPG or PSD design to JPG for print should use quality 92 or above. For a PSD to JPG for print shop, 300 DPI at the final size is usually needed; set that with the print-size mode in the resize tool.
Under 1 MB
For a PSD to JPG under 1 MB, lower quality slightly and set a longest side. For an exact target, use Compress image to a set KB afterwards.
Batch converting PSD files

Tips for big batches

Windows and Chromebook
Windows has no built-in way to open PSD without Photoshop. This page works in Edge or Chrome, and the same goes for a Chromebook.
Mac
Preview can show some PSDs, but not all of them, and exports one at a time. This page converts batches in Safari or Chrome.
iPhone and Android

Troubleshooting PSD conversions
PSD blank or white, or partly missing
When a PSD has no saved combined preview, our server rebuilds the picture from its layers. Some Photoshop-only effects, such as certain adjustment layers or smart filters, may not render exactly. In Photoshop, the setting called maximize compatibility saves that preview, so ask the designer to re-save with it switched on, or to use Photoshop export as JPG themselves.
PSD colors look different
CMYK and wide-gamut designs are converted to screen colours, so very bright tones may shift slightly. Compare with hold to compare (B key) and adjust in the photo editor if needed.
Keeping quality
The quality slider decides the trade-off. Use quality 90–95 for PSD to JPG high quality results, or PSD to JPG without losing quality that anyone would notice. Fine text and gradients stay smooth, and you can zoom up to 16× to check edges.
