What to do when an AVIF file will not open

What is AVIF?

Is AVIF better than PNG?
For delivery on the web, AVIF usually wins on size. For compatibility and editing, PNG is safer. Keep AVIF for your site and convert a copy when you need to open or share it elsewhere. AVIF browser support is good in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, but not in older apps.
Transparency is kept
PNG supports an alpha channel, so logos and cut-outs give an AVIF to PNG transparent background. If you do not need transparency, AVIF to JPG gives a smaller file.
Expect a larger file
The PNG will be bigger because AVIF compresses so well. A PNG of a photo can be many times larger; for graphics the gap is smaller.
