Crop, cut or trim?
People search for a way to cut image online or trim image online, but they usually mean the same thing: removing the outside part of a picture. That is cropping. If you want to cut a person out of the background instead, use background removal.
An online crop tool that respects privacy
Most online crop tool pages send your file to a server. This picture cropper does not: the crop happens in your browser, which is why it is safe to crop image without uploading anything, even ID documents. It is also quick to crop picture online on slow connections because nothing has to travel.
Zoom and crop image details
The stage zooms, so you can zoom and crop image details such as a single face in a group photo or a logo on a shirt. It is also the easiest way to crop out part of image files you only need a small piece of, or to crop face from photo shots for an ID.
Crop image to an aspect ratio
Ratios are grouped by where the picture is going, so you do not need to remember numbers. Tap swap to flip any ratio between portrait and landscape.
| Group | Ratios | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Free, Original, 1:1 | Anything, profile photos |
| Social | 4:5, 9:16, 16:9, 1.91:1, 2:3 | Instagram, stories, YouTube, link previews, Pinterest |
| 3:2, 4:3, 5:7, A4 | Photo prints and documents | |
| ID | 35×45 mm, 2×2 in | Passport and visa photos |
Crop image 16:9 and 9:16
To crop image 16:9 for a YouTube thumbnail or slide, pick 16:9 in Social. For reels, stories and a phone wallpaper, choose 9:16 or tap swap. Searches for crop image 9:16 usually come from reel and story creators, and this ratio fits a phone screen exactly.
Freeform crop image and Original
Choose Free for a freeform crop image job where no ratio matters, such as trimming a screenshot. Original keeps the photo’s own shape while you remove edges from photo borders. Switch to a fixed ratio whenever you need to crop image to aspect ratio rules, such as a platform or print size.
Crop image 1:1 and 4:5
To crop image to square, choose 1:1. For the taller Instagram feed format, crop image 4:5; it takes more screen space than a square. You can crop photo to square for a shop grid too, or crop image into square online for a crop image for product photo listing, where every tile must match.
Wide and tall ratios
Use 1.91:1 when you crop image 1.91:1 for link previews, and 2:3 when you crop image 2:3 for a Pinterest pin, so you can also crop image for pinterest without guessing.
Crop image 4:3 and 3:2
Most phone cameras shoot 4:3 and most DSLRs shoot 3:2. To crop image 4:3 or crop image 3:2 for prints, use the Print group so the picture matches standard paper sizes like 6×4 inches. To crop image 6x4 for a lab print, use 3:2; to crop image 5:7 for a frame, use 5:7; and to crop image a4 for documents, pick A4. These are the ratios you need to crop image to print size.
Circle crop image and other shapes
Masks turn a rectangle into another shape and make everything outside it transparent. The result is saved as a transparent PNG, ready for profile pictures, stickers and presentations.
How to crop a picture into a circle
- Choose 1:1 so the circle is round, not oval.
- Pick the circle mask.
- Move and resize the box until the face sits in the middle.
- Save as PNG to keep the transparent corners.
That is all it takes to crop image to circle. It works like a circle pfp maker for WhatsApp, Discord or LinkedIn.
Rounded corners
The rounded corners mask softens a rectangle, which looks good on app screenshots and product cards. It is also saved with transparent corners, so to crop image rounded corners for a slide you only need one click.
Square image to circle and ovals
To turn a square image to circle, keep 1:1 and pick the circle mask. With any other ratio, the same mask makes an oval, which is how you crop photo into oval frames. This is the simplest round crop image online option and a quick way to crop image into shapes beyond rectangles.
Crop photo into circle with transparent background
If you save as JPG, the corners become a solid colour because JPG has no transparency. Choose PNG or WebP to crop photo into circle with transparent background, then compress the PNG if it needs to be smaller. Anyone who wants to crop image with transparent background should always crop image and save as png.
Crop logo image files
To crop logo image files, choose Free and drag tight to the edges, then keep PNG. For an app icon, pick 1:1 first.
Crop image by pixels to an exact size
When a website or form lists exact dimensions, drag-and-guess is not good enough. Type the numbers instead.
Crop image to exact size
Use the pixel fields to set the width, height and position of the crop. This lets you crop image by pixels down to a single pixel, so you can crop image to exact size for a banner slot or template.
Crop image to specific dimensions, then resize
Cropping keeps the original pixels; it does not scale them. If you need a crop that is, say, exactly 1200×628, crop at 1.91:1 and then use the image resizer to set the final pixels. That is the cleanest way to crop and resize image online.
Keyboard control
- Arrow keys move the crop box.
- Alt + arrows resize it.
- R rotates 90°, F flips.
- Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z undo and redo.
Smart crop: face centring, auto-straighten and trim
The Smart options do the fiddly parts for you. Each one only suggests a crop; you can adjust it afterwards.
Centre on face
Finds the face and places the crop around it. It is ideal when you crop headshot online for a team page or crop photo for profile picture use.
Auto-straighten
Finds the horizon or strong straight edges, such as a building or a table, and levels the picture. You can also straighten by hand with the ±45° slider. The stage zooms in automatically so no empty corners appear.
Trim plain borders
Removes plain white or single-colour borders around scans and screenshots. It is the quickest way to crop screenshot online and remove the empty margins around a document.
Rotate and flip
Rotate 90° and flip horizontally or vertically inside the cropper, so you can crop and rotate image files or crop and flip image selfies in one place. To straighten photo sets or any crop tilted photo job in bulk, use the rotate tool instead.
Crop photos for social media
Each platform shows pictures at its own shape. Cropping first means you decide what gets cut, not the app.
Crop image for Instagram
To crop image for instagram, use 1:1 for a square post, 4:5 for portrait, or 9:16 for stories and reels. The 4:5 shape usually gets the most attention in the feed.
YouTube thumbnail and Facebook cover
To crop image for youtube thumbnail, choose 16:9 and keep faces and text away from the bottom-right corner, where the time stamp sits. To crop image for facebook cover, crop wide and keep the subject in the centre, because phones show less of the sides.
LinkedIn profile and WhatsApp DP
To crop image for linkedin profile or crop photo for whatsapp dp, use 1:1 and centre on the face. Both apps show a circle, so leave a little space above the head.
Discord, X and presentations
To crop image for discord avatars, use a circle mask. To crop image for twitter posts, 16:9 shows fully in the timeline, and to crop image for presentation slides, 16:9 fills the screen.
Wallpapers
To crop photo for wallpaper 9:16, choose 9:16 and position the subject in the middle third, where clock widgets do not cover it.
Crop photos for passports, forms and documents
ID photos and form uploads have strict rules. The ID ratios make them easy.
Crop photo to passport size
To crop photo to passport size, choose 35×45 mm (India, UK and many other countries) or 2×2 in (USA). Centre on face puts the head in the middle. Then use the resize tool’s passport preset if you also need the exact pixels and DPI.
Crop photo 3.5cm x 4.5cm for SSC and other forms
The 35×45 mm ratio is the same as crop photo 3.5cm x 4.5cm. Use it to crop photo for ssc form uploads, then resize to 413×531 pixels and 20–50 KB.
Crop signature from photo
Photograph your signature on white paper, choose Free and drag the box tightly around the ink. This is how you crop signature from photo without any extra paper. Trim plain borders can tidy the edges. Together these steps cover crop photo and signature for online form jobs.
Crop Aadhaar card image
The same approach suits any crop image for id card or crop scanned document job. To crop aadhaar card image scans, use Trim plain borders or drag close to the card edge, and keep the text sharp by saving at high quality.
Crop JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and HEIC
The cropper opens all common formats and lets you choose the output.
| Input | Good output | Note |
|---|---|---|
| JPG / JPEG | JPG | Quality slider controls size |
| PNG | PNG | Transparency kept |
| WebP | WebP or JPG | JPG for older apps |
| HEIC | JPG | Opens directly in the browser |
| GIF | PNG | Saved as a still picture |
Crop JPG and crop PNG
To crop jpg photos, keep the same format and a high quality setting. To crop png graphics, keep PNG so you crop png keep transparency intact.
WebP and HEIC
You can crop webp image files straight from a website and crop heic photo files from an iPhone. For a moving GIF, the cropper saves a still frame (that is the answer to how to crop a GIF with this tool); to crop gif animations with every frame, this tool is not the right fit.
Crop without losing quality
Cropping itself does not blur a picture: it simply removes pixels from the edges. Quality only changes when the file is saved again as a lossy format.
Does cropping reduce image quality?
The pixels you keep stay the same, so you can crop image without losing quality as long as you avoid heavy JPG compression. What you lose is resolution: a tight crop of a small photo may look soft when it is shown large. If that happens, upscale the cropped image.
How to crop an image without losing quality
- Save PNG for graphics and screenshots.
- For JPG, keep quality at 85 or higher.
- Start from the original photo, not a copy shared through chat apps.
Difference between crop and resize
Crop removes part of the picture. Resize makes the whole picture larger or smaller. Many jobs need both, so crop here first and resize second.
Crop images on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac
The image cropper works in any modern browser, so there is nothing to install.
Crop image on iPhone and Android
To crop image on iphone, open the page in Safari and pick from Photos. To crop image on android, use Chrome. Handles are sized for fingers, and options open as a bottom sheet, which makes it easy to crop photo on mobile online.
Crop image in Windows 11 and on Mac
The built-in apps can crop image in windows 11 or crop image on mac, but they lack ID ratios, masks and exact pixels. Here you also get keyboard control and paste from the clipboard.
One picture at a time
The cropper edits one image at a time so every crop can be framed by hand. To crop multiple images at once to the same shape, use Fill & crop in the bulk resizer, which can bulk crop images online around each face.
