Why colours look grainy
To fit a photo into 256 colours, GIF uses dithering, a fine pattern of dots that imitates missing shades. Skies and skin tones show it most. That is normal for the format, not a fault in the converter.
Is GIF better than JPG?
For still photos, no: JPG looks better and is smaller. Choose GIF when you need animation or a site specifically asks for GIF. For a still transparent graphic, JPG to PNG is usually the better target.
Keep the GIF file size small

Why is my GIF so big?
