Why you should reduce image file size
Smaller files upload faster, fit into email limits and pass the KB checks on government portals. On a website, lighter pictures load quicker on mobile data. If you need to reduce image size for any of these reasons, you are in the right place.
Remove or keep camera data

Every photo is different, so the image compressor gives you four modes. Most people never need to leave the default.
Smart mode (default)
Smart tries stronger settings one after another and compares each result with the original using SSIM, a measure of how similar two pictures look to the human eye. It keeps the smallest file that still looks identical. A typical camera JPG ends up 50–60% smaller, and screenshots or PNG graphics can drop by up to 85%.
Exact size in KB
Tap 20, 50, 100, 200 or 500 KB, or type any number. The tool keeps JPG quality at 45 or higher and only shrinks the pixel dimensions if it cannot reach the target any other way. This is the fastest way to compress image to specific size for an upload form.
By quality

Lossless compression

Compress image from MB to KB
A 4 MB phone photo is often 4000 pixels wide. For a form, set a longest-side limit of 1200 px or less, then pick the KB target. Dropping pixels first saves far more than squeezing quality, so the picture stays sharp. To compress image to 200kb for email, Smart mode alone is often enough.
Compress image to 20kb for a signature
Signatures are mostly white paper, so they compress well. If you need to compress signature to 20kb, first crop the signature tightly, then set 20 KB. A scan at 140×60 pixels usually lands well under the limit, and even a compress signature to 10kb target is realistic.
Compress photos for exam and government forms
Indian recruitment and admission portals are strict about size. They check file size, format and sometimes pixel dimensions. Here is how to reduce photo size in KB without the upload being rejected.
SSC, UPSC, IBPS and NEET photos
SSC usually asks for a JPG photo of 20–50 KB and a signature of 10–20 KB. IBPS bank forms use similar windows, UPSC allows up to about 300 KB, and NEET or JEE forms accept roughly 10–200 KB. Always read the latest notice, because limits change between years.
- Get the right pixels with the resize tool with exam presets (for example SSC 413×531 or IBPS 200×230).
- Come back here and choose Exact size with the upper KB limit.
- Check the final size shown on the card before you upload.
If a form says the file is too small
Some portals also reject files below a minimum, such as 20 KB. Compression can only make files smaller, so use the KB window in the resize tool, which pads safely to reach “at least” sizes.
Aadhaar, PAN and other documents
To compress aadhaar card image size for a KYC upload, crop away the table edge, keep the text readable and target 100–200 KB. Text needs more quality than faces, so avoid the Strong setting for documents. The same applies when you compress pan card photo size or any compress image for online form upload task.
Common compression jobs and the settings that work
Most people who search for a picture compressor have one of a handful of jobs in mind. These settings are a good starting point for each, and you can always compress photo online again with a different target if the first try misses.
Email and chat
To reduce image size for email is the most common job of all. Very small targets
You can compress image to 10kb or compress image to 30kb, but when you compress photo size this far, the pixel count matters more than quality. Keep photos around 200–300 px wide. To compress jpg to 50kb for a thumbnail, 600 px is plenty, and to compress png to 100kb a logo usually needs only colour reduction.
Larger targets
If you want to shrink image size only a little, try 150 or 300 KB: you can compress image to 150kb for a portfolio and compress image to 300kb for a blog header. If a print shop asks you to compress image to 1mb or compress image to 2mb, keep the full resolution and let Smart mode do the work. A print-quality JPG rarely needs Strong compression.

Compress JPG and reduce JPEG file size
To compress jpg photos, Smart mode is the safest choice. It also removes camera data, which alone can save tens of KB. It works the same when you compress jpeg files with the .jpeg extension, so you can reduce jpeg file size without renaming anything.
Compress PNG without losing transparency
When you compress png files, transparent areas stay transparent. If a PNG is actually a photo, try the “smallest of JPG/PNG vs WebP” output, or convert the PNG to JPG for a big saving, though JPG cannot keep transparency.

Compress image without losing quality
“Without losing quality” means the change is invisible to your eye, not that the file is byte-identical. Smart mode is built around this idea: it measures similarity and stops before damage becomes visible.
Lossy vs lossless compression
Lossy compression throws away detail you are unlikely to notice, which gives big savings. Lossless compression only stores the same pixels more efficiently, so savings are smaller but nothing changes. Use lossless for text-heavy graphics and lossy for photos.
What is SSIM?
SSIM (structural similarity) compares brightness, contrast and structure between two pictures. A score very close to 1 means they look the same. Smart mode uses it to decide how far it can go for each individual photo.
How compress image quality settings work
The quality number tells the encoder how much fine detail to keep. Around 80 is invisible for most photos, 60 is fine for thumbnails, and below 45 skin and sky start to show blocks.
Tips to keep photos sharp
- Resize before compressing; extra pixels waste bytes.
- Avoid compressing the same JPG again and again.
- Use the zoom (up to 16×) and hold to compare to check faces and text.
- If a photo is already small or blurry, upscale the image instead.

Troubleshooting compressed images
Why did my file not get smaller?
Some files are already well compressed. If Smart cannot save space without a visible change, it tells you rather than making the photo worse. Try a longest-side limit or WebP output.
Why is my PNG so large?
Photos stored as PNG are heavy by nature. Choose the smallest of JPG/PNG vs WebP, or save it as JPG if you do not need transparency.
The form still rejects my photo
Check three things: the format (most forms want JPG), the pixel size, and the KB window. Use the image resizer for pixels and minimum sizes, then compress for the maximum.
The picture looks blocky
The target was too small for the pixel size. Reduce the dimensions first, or raise the KB target a little.
