Is PNG better than JPG?
Neither wins in every case. Which is better, PNG or JPG, depends on the picture. For photos, JPG gives a far smaller file that looks the same to the eye. For a logo with sharp edges and transparent areas, PNG usually wins.
Lossless vs lossy in plain words
Lossless means the file stores the exact pixels. Lossy means the encoder throws away detail your eye is unlikely to miss, which is why JPG files are small. At high quality settings the loss is very hard to see.
Convert PNG to JPG without losing quality

Pick the right JPG quality setting
Keep the quality slider high for photos you will print or edit again. A middle value is plenty for sharing, email and web pages. Lower it only when a strict size limit matters more than fine detail.

When JPG is the wrong choice

What happens to transparency when you convert PNG to JPG
JPG cannot store transparent pixels. Every transparent area has to become a solid colour. The converter lets you choose that fill colour, so transparent PNG to JPG conversion never gives you a surprise black box.

Why is my JPG bigger than the PNG?
Usually a PNG photo turns into a much smaller JPG. But for flat graphics, such as a chart, a logo with few colours or a text screenshot, PNG compresses extremely well and a JPG can end up bigger. That is normal, not a fault.
What to do if the JPG grows
Lower the quality slider a little, or keep the file as PNG. If you only need a smaller file, compress the PNG instead of converting it. For a wider choice of output formats, open the image converter.
Files are checked by their bytes
Sometimes a file named .png is really a JPG or WebP inside. The converter reads the actual bytes, so it still converts correctly.
