What happens to transparent backgrounds

Many PNGs have see-through areas: logos, stickers, signatures cut from paper, or design exports. A PDF page needs something behind them.

White fill for documents

For documents and printing, fill transparent areas with white. A PNG to PDF white background makes a signature look like ink on paper.

A colour of your choice

You can fill with any colour instead, for example your brand colour behind a logo proof. If you need a clean cut-out first, remove the background and then convert.

Is transparency kept?

Transparency is either kept, giving a PNG to PDF transparent background, or filled with the colour you choose. For a page that prints predictably, a solid fill is the safer pick.

Page size, margins and layout

Choose the page size that suits where the file is going.

A4 for printing

Pick A4 for anything headed to a printer or an office. Choosing PNG to PDF a4 size avoids odd scaling at the print shop.

Adding a margin

A margin adds white space around each image. It keeps diagram labels away from the paper edge and makes a chart or diagram page look finished.

Same size as the image

For a phone screenshot, same as picture keeps the tall portrait shape with no white bars, which suits sharing on WhatsApp.

Why is my PDF bigger than the PNG, and how to fix it

A PDF stores each PNG you add, so the file size is about the total of your PNGs. That is fine for screenshots, which are small. It becomes a problem with photos saved as PNG, which can be 5-15 MB each.

When the file is too big

Three ways to bring the size down:

• If the PNGs are photos, try PNG to JPG before PDF by turning them into JPG first with PNG to JPG. Photos usually shrink a lot.
• Run screenshots through image compression. PNG screenshots often get up to 85% smaller.
• Lower the longest side in the converter. 1600-2000 px is enough for a readable A4 page.

Staying under 200 KB for forms

For a PNG to PDF under 200kb exam form upload, resize each page to about 1200 px on the long side and compress to a known size first. Two pages near 90 KB each give a PDF under 200 KB. For under 100 KB, stick to one light page.

If the result looks blurry

Blur is in the source. A tiny screenshot stretched onto A4 will look soft, so use same as picture, or enlarge it first with the upscaler.

On iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac

Any modern browser works, so there is nothing to install.

iPhone and iPad

In Safari, tap to add files and pick from Photos or Files. PNG to PDF on iPhone and iPad takes three taps for an iPhone screenshot to PDF, and the result can be saved to Files or shared.

Android

PNG vs PDF: which one to send

The difference between PNG and PDF comes down to purpose. What is a PNG file? PNG is a lossless image format with optional transparency. PDF is a page-based document that can hold many images and prints at a fixed size.

• Send PNG for a single graphic on a website or in an app.
• Send PDF for several pages, for printing, or when a form asks for a document.
