What is a BMP file, and why is it so large?
The BMP file format is the Windows bitmap, also called device independent bitmap (DIB). It stores every pixel as plain numbers, one after another. A 24-bit BMP uses three bytes per pixel with no compression, so a 3000 × 2000 photo takes about 18 MB.
Why is BMP so large compared with JPG?
JPG uses lossy compression tuned to the human eye. It drops fine detail you would not notice and packs the rest tightly. The same 18 MB photo often becomes a JPG of 1–2 MB at high quality, and a few hundred KB at medium quality. That gap is why a bmp file too large for email or a form upload is the most common reason people change BMP to JPG.
24-bit, 32-bit and RLE bitmaps
Most old bmp images are 24-bit colour. A 32-bit BMP can carry an alpha channel for transparency, and some small icons use RLE BMP compression. The converter handles all of these. A lossless BMP is an uncompressed image, so moving it to a well-set JPG changes the file size far more than the look.

BMP vs PNG for screenshots and graphics
A bmp screenshot to JPG is fine, but for logos and text-heavy graphics PNG is the better target because it is lossless and still much smaller than BMP. Pick PNG in the same converter, or open the image converter for any format if you need BMP to PNG or BMP to WebP.
BMP or JPG, which is better for printing?
At quality 90 or above a JPG prints with no visible difference from the bitmap. Keep the original BMP only if a print shop or an old machine specifically asks for it.

Quality tips and troubleshooting
Does converting BMP to JPG lose quality?
Technically yes, because JPG is lossy, but at quality 85–92 the difference is invisible at normal size. JPG quality 85 is a sound default for photos; use 92 or higher for high quality prints. Use hold to compare (B key) or the before/after slider to check with your own eyes.
Can I rename a BMP to JPG?
No. Renaming only changes the label. The data inside is still a bitmap, so many sites will reject it or show a broken image. You need a real conversion.
Transparent backgrounds
A BMP with transparency is rare, but if yours has one, transparent pixels are filled with the colour you choose – white by default. If you need to keep it clear, convert to PNG instead.
Colours look slightly different
Old bitmaps with 256-colour palettes may band a little in JPG. Raise the quality or choose PNG for those flat, limited-colour images.
