Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. Conversion cannot restore detail that JPG compression already removed. What it does is freeze the current quality so it never gets worse. If a photo is too small or blurry, upscale the image instead.
Is PNG better quality than JPG?
PNG stores pixels exactly, so it is the safer container. For sharing a finished photo, though, a good JPG looks the same and is much smaller.
JPG to PNG with a transparent background
A JPG cannot hold transparency, so every JPG has a solid background. Converting to PNG gives you a file that can be transparent, but the background pixels stay as they are until something removes them.
How to get a transparent PNG

- Let it cut out the subject automatically, then touch up edges with the Erase and Restore brushes.

Can a JPG have a transparent background?
No. If a download claims to be a transparent JPG, it is either a PNG with the wrong extension or a checkerboard pattern baked into the pixels. Our converter reads files by their bytes, so a mislabelled file still converts correctly.
Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?
This is expected. A JPG throws away detail to stay small, while a PNG stores every pixel. A 2 MB camera JPG can easily become a PNG several times that size. The bigger file is the price of lossless storage.
How to reduce PNG size
We already pack the PNG with OxiPNG, which shrinks it without changing a pixel. If the file is still too big, set a longest-side limit, or compress the image after converting.
Consider WebP instead
If you want lossless quality and transparency in a smaller file, convert JPG to WebP. WebP supports a lossless mode and is widely supported by modern browsers.
